Imani! Dance company is under the capable direction of Dorian Byrd. Ms. Byrd is a performing artist, instructor, choreographer, and storyteller. She received her BFA degree from the Juilliard School and her MA degree from the University of Iowa dance programs. Her varied background in dance and performing arts include work in the states and abroad and covers a wide range of dance style from classical to modern and ethnic dance forms. She formerly danced with Dianne McIntyre's Sounds In Motion, Elizabeth Keen Dance Company, and Glenn Brook’s Third World Movements in New York City. Dorian has conducted residencies for numerous Artist-In-School programs throughout the states of New York, Nebraska, and Iowa. In addition, she had taught at the University of Nebraska, Delta College, Teikyo Marycrest University, and the University of Iowa. Currently she teaches dance at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and is a rostered dance and storytelling artist with the Iowa Arts Council.
In 2005, Dorian established the The Imani! Dancers Studio for Cultural Arts which serves both children and adults by providing classes in creative dance, lyrical dance, afro-modern, and world rhythms. Students perform in the end of the year recital “A May Zing” as well as many community events throughout the year, such as, the Unity Festival, Kwanzaa, Festival of Trees and The Wells Fargo Arts Fest. |
